Padding for Historic Title Defense

Last 9 Games

Record (7-2)       Season (97-44)  GB 0.0     Series Play (30-8-7)
  • An epic comeback in the final game of this nine-game stretch was a very appropriate topper on this season for the ages. Down 7-1 going into the eighth inning against Atlanta, Boston rallied for six runs to tied the game. Then, after Brandon Workman tried to arse things up by serving a homer up to Freddie Freeman, Brandon Phillips capped an impressive debut by blasting a two-run homer in the top of the ninth for an incredible 9-8 win. This pushed Boston to a phenomenal major league leading 97 wins and they now lead the Yankees by 9.5 games gaining three and a half games on their arch-rivals during this stretch. The Red Sox have never won three consecutive division titles in their history, but this latest cushion pretty much puts things to bed in the AL East. Boston has now won 97 games 7 times in their history, and the last two times they did this, they won world titles (2013 and 2004). The magic number to win the AL East is 13, and their 41-15 record since July 2nd is tops in the majors.
  • Boston bookended a mediocre series split in Chicago with sweeps at home against Miami and on the road against the Braves, Boston has 14 series sweeps to their credit and has only been blanked once in a series during this 2018 campaign. When they score first, Boston is 64-11 and when they don't, they are 33-33. Both of this records are the best marks in the majors.
  • It was great to see Ian Kinsler heating up during this nine-game run as he is a very suitable replacement for Pedroia. I really like what I saw from Brandon Phillips and even though he'd have to show more to have a shot at a postseason roster berth, I'm certainly open to that idea. He's a better defender at 37 years of age than the youngster Rafael Devers, and as we know, pitching and defense become more magnified in October. Devers has a bright future in Boston, and despite the growing pains with his defense, I thought he had a solid year demonstrating the raw offensive potential. If the playoffs started tomorrow, I'd have Eduardo Nunez at third, If Phillips can continue to contribute, I like him off the bench more than Devers on the merits of his defense alone.
  • The one issue that could scuttle a season for the ages is that bullpen. I have no faith in Thornburg or Kelly which casts the spotlight on Hembree, Barnes and Brasier to carry the mail for Craig Kimbrel. Dave Dombrowski could take a ton of heat if the pen springs a leak as he has never really addressed shortcomings in this area in the past two seasons. There is talk of Eovaldi pitching out of the pen on Sale's return and that could add value to the back end of the corps.
