Series Streak Stopped

Last 10 Games

Record (4-6)       Season (90-42)  GB 0.0     Series Play (28-8-6)
  • On Sunday, July 1st the Red Sox were trounced 11-1 by the New York Yankees in the Bronx. It was the rubber game of the series, and because of that loss, New York pulled into a first-place tie with the Yankees. David Price became public enemy number one among Red Sox Nation as he fell victim to the Yankee barrage. Price was pounded for 9 hits and 8 runs with 5 of those hits leaving the ballpark. This embarrassment on national television represented an epic turning point as the club proceeded to embark on an incredible run. The very next day, Boston launched a 10 game unbeaten streak and would only lose 5 more games in July. Coming into Tampa, the Red Sox were leading the AL East by 9.5 games and undefeated in their last 14 series winning 10 and splitting 4. So, I guess you could say the squad was due for a letdown and that was the case against the Rays as they were swept in a series for the first time this season. Their lead has shrunk to 6 games, but I really don't feel any need for panic just yet.

  • The month of July featured terrific starting pitching for Boston. They led the majors in starting ERA (2.95) and rode a rejuvenated David Price. With Chris Sale nursing an inflamed shoulder, Price has been money. Since he got his ass kicked in New York, David has gone 5-0 with a 2.05 ERA and fanned 57 batters in 52.2 innings. As good as Price has been, Nathan Eovaldi has lost his way. After a scintillating start as a Red Sox, his last 16 innings read as follows: 34 H, 20 R, 14 ER, 3 BB, 11 K. Brian Johnson bubble has also burst in August as his ERA skyrocketed to 6.14. He has three wins to his credit, but this has been due largely to the fact that Boston scores in bunches when Brian takes the bump. With Porcello's uneven August (2-3, 4.78), Price's impact as staff stopper has been unquestionably magnified and has Boston fans pondering the much-needed return of staff ace Chris Sale. There is still no need to rush Chris back just yet, as they need him healthy for the stretch run as the team heads towards the postseason. Nonetheless, if Boston's slide continues into early September, Sale's presence may be required sooner than later.

  • Poor starting pitching coupled with a slumping offense will yield predictable results. As I harp on the starters above, the offense has done precious little in support. The Sawx only scored 5 runs in the three games at the Trop. All world right fielder Mookie Betts has fallen into a rare abyss and he is the spark plug that makes this offense go. JD Martinez continues to bash and has overtaken Mookie for the top spot in AL batting average by one point (.337 to Mookie's .336). Triple crown aspirations continue to be in sight for Martinez as he trails Oakland's Khris Davis by one homer (JD has 38), and JD has the lead in RBI with 110. Martinez has hit .400 in the month of August and leads the team with 6 dingers and 21 RBI. Xander Bogaerts underrated season continues and he has been driving the ball all over the lot with 12 steaks in the last ten contests. However, things have dropped off considerably after these two. So it's time for some home cooking to get the Sawx back on track. With a quick two-game set at Fenway against the Marlins, Boston needs to take advantage of these bottom feeders.
