NLCS Game # 1 - ' 82 Brewers vs ' 88 Mets

Brewers Batter Mets with Long Ball

Robin Yount and Cecil Cooper drove in three runs each to lead the '82 Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-1 opening game victory over the '88 New York Mets in the NLCS at Miller Park.

Mike Caldwell continued an impressive playoff as he went the distance scattering 10 hits for his second post season win. Caldwell was a master at changing speed throughout the game as the Mets could not manage a sustained attack against the veteran left-hander. Caldwell has been steady if not unspectacular in this post season, but he has 2 quality starts to his credit in three outings giving up 22 hits in 21.2 innings. He has walked 6 and struck out only 7, and has a 2.91 ERA. He was also the victor in the deciding fifth game of the NLDS against the '85 Cardinals going 7.2 innings in a 5-2 win

Cecil Cooper had  two aboard with two out in the third inning and was down in the count 0-2. Mets' starter Dave Cone decided to go high and inside on Cooper, but Cooper was sitting dead red and hammered a ball into the right field bullpen to put Milwaukee on top 3-0.  The Brewers' Robin Yount delivered the knockout punch in the very next inning as he belted a Cone offspeed offering deep over the center field wall for a two run shot to further the gap at 5-0. Yount is batting a blistering .555 in these playoffs with 2 doubles, 2 homers and 9 RBI.

Cone, who had been undefeated coming into the game lasted only four innings as he was pinch hit for in the fifth. He had 7 strikeouts against the free swinging Brewers, but he missed location at two critical junctures which costed him dearly.

New York will try to even the series as they will send Dwight Gooden to the bump to face the Brewers' Moose Haas in Game 2. Haas also had a win in the NLDS against the Cardinals.
