ALDS Game # 4 - ' 88 Red Sox vs ' 85 Yankees

Yankees Walk Away with Series Clincher

The only free pass Roger Clemens allowed the Yankees proved costly as it came with the bases loaded and represented the winning run in a 4-2 New York victory. The Yankees took the series 3-1 and will now move on to meet the ' 87 Detroit Tigers in the American League Championship Series.

With the game deadlocked at 2-2, the fifth inning saw New York slap three consecutive singles after Clemens had retired Willie Randolph. In a puzzling effort to pitch around Ken Griffey, Clemens walked him on four pitches to force Mike Pagliarulo home giving the Yankees a 3-2 edge. Guidry and the bullpen trio of Brian Fisher, Neil Allen and Dave Righetti then closed the door on Boston holding them hitless for the remainder of the contest.

It was another classic pitching duel which was a rematch of Game 1 starters > http://buzzingthetowersawx.blogspot.ca/2014/09/alds-game-1-88-red-sox-vs-85-yankees.html with Boston's ace Clemens getting the better of the Yankees' Ron Guidry at Fenway. In both games, Clemens was the more dominate pitcher, but a lack of offense was his undoing in the series' clincher as Boston managed only 2 hits off Yankee pitching.

New York opened the scoring on a sacrifice fly by DH Don Baylor. Dave Winfield hit a one out double and stole third to set things up for Baylor. The Red Sox then took a brief lead in the fourth inning as Dwight Evans clubbed a two run homer after Mike Greenwell drew a two out walk. New York replied in the home half of the inning as Don Mattingly drilled a solo shot to dead center field. Mattingly batted .500 in the series with 2 homers and 2 RBIs.

After the inexplicable loss of control by Clemens when dealing with Griffey, New York sealed the deal with another RBI by Baylor in the eighth. He once again plated Dave Winfield as Winfield singled off reliever Dennis Lamp and stole second. Lamp struck out Ron Hassey and was one out away from getting out of the inning, but Baylor planted the dagger with a single to center.

I think I'll shift my focus now to the National League and pick up the ' 82 Brewers as they will face the '88 Mets in the NLCS

*ICYMI > Game 3 -  http://buzzingthetowersawx.blogspot.ca/2014/10/alds-game-3-88-red-sox-vs-85-yankees.html
