The Sensational 70s - Sawx Streaking on Home Stretch

With the all-star break upon us, I figured I'd try to fill the gap with some action from my Sensational 70's season as the '75 Red Sox have hit mid August on their schedule and are heating up as the final month of the season looms. It has been a while since my last update as I've busily been creating classic rosters for MLB 16, and it has taken the lion share of my playing time. With those roster in the rear view mirror now, I'm finally getting back to the fun.

Boston is currently on a 10 game homestand which started out with a loss to the '79 Astros, but the hometown boys reeled off 3 consecutive victories to take the first series from Houston. In the finale, Rick Wise notched his 13th win of the season as  the Red Sox hung on to beat the Astros 4-3. Wise is now 13-9 with an ERA of 3.30. He struck out 7 and walked 3 and only allowed one earned run.

LIght-hitting leadoff man Denny Doyle clubbed a two run homer which proved to be the game winning stroke. Rick Burleson rounded out the scoring with two ribbies of his own in the third inning.

The Astros threatened in the top half of the 8th with Cesar Cedeno and Enos Cabell hitting back to back singles off Sawx reliever Jim Willoughby. Dave Bergman promptly added a single of his own to score Cedeno and move Cabell to third.  After Willoughby struck out pinch hitter Jeffery Leonard, he was tagged with yet another single by Craig Reynolds that scored Cabell and sent him to the showers.  With the tying run in Bergman at third, Boston called on Dick Drago.  On an ill advised move, Bergman tried to score on a comebacker to Drago and was pegged at the plate. Drago then struck out Jose Cruz and tossed a scoreless 9th to deliver the 4-3 win and collect his 27th save. Highlights are below.

The '79 Angels are now in town and the Red Sox have not been congenial hosts as they took the opener of this series to the tune of 5-2.

Fred Lynn was the star in this one as he went a perfect 3-3 drilling a 2 run homer. However, his "Gold Dust" sibling. Jim Rice, gave Boston all the run support they'd need with a bases loaded double in the right field gap. That cleared the sacks to pace Boston to a 3-0 lead in the third. Reggie Cleveland picked up his 8th win of the season and once again Drago came on to  close the door for his 28th save.

Boston will be attempting to widen the gap in the AL Wildcard standings as the Angels and Astros seem to be faltering. The Yankees are really rolling and could be tough to overtake in the AL East, but both the Red Sox and Orioles are within striking distance and some key head to head matchups will be coming in September.
