Classic 70s Bruins - October Recap

After a middling beginning to the season, the Bruins have caught fire riding a six-game unbeaten streak. This stretch was launched by Boston salvaging a tie against Montreal to end a disappointing four-game homestand. Two ties and a pair of losses sent the Bruins packing for a three-game road trip, and it was on this journey that they flipped the switch.

Arriving in Toronto was just the tonic as Boston beat the Leafs for the third time in the young season. Phil Esposito put the team on his shoulders scoring four times in a wild see-saw affair that saw Boston hang on for a 7-6 win. Another contentious battle ensued at the Spectrum, and the Bruins earned their second tie in as many meetings with the Flyers. Their stiffest test would come in a home and home set against the division-leading Islanders. Up to this point, Boston was winless in their previous three meetings with the Isles, but the Bruins served noticed that they were now firing on all cylinders sweeping New York. To end the month, the Canadiens came for their second visit to the Gardens. After falling behind 1-0, the Bruins scored four unanswered goals led by the fabulous duo of Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr. Each of Boston's superstars scored a pair of goals to give the Bruins a 4-1 victory.

Team and league stats leaders are listed below. The Bruins' top line of Esposito, Cashman, and Hodge accounted for 38 points this month. Boston also has the top powerplay in the league operating a little above 30%.
