Red Sox Report - August

The Red Sox racked up 18 wins of the 26 games they played in the month of August. Still, they were only able to gain one full game on the front-running Yankees in the American League East standings. Unless New York goes into a complete tailspin in the final month of the season, it looks like Boston will be destined for the top wild-card spot as they hold a comfortable margin over the Angels. The Sawx didn't discriminate between venues as they went 9-4 both at home and on the road. Their record for the season at Fenway is 43-26, and they have a 37-30 record when being hosted.

Below are the numbers for the season to date for Boston. On the bump, Pedro Martinez and Roger Clemens are tied for the American League lead with 17 wins apiece, and Jon Lester is the ERA leader. Clemens is fourth overall in strikeouts with an even 200 while Martinez is tied with Justin Verlander for seventh with 165 whiffs. Jonathan Papelbon and Dick Radatz continue to be a formidable duo at the back end of the pen. Papelbon is twelfth in the league with 24 saves and Radatz has chipped in with 17 of his own.

Wade Boggs trails Hank Greenberg by the slightest of margins for tops in batting average in the Junior Circuit. Greenberg's average sits at .344. However, Boggs does lead the league in total number of hits. Ted Williams is fifth overall in league batting and eighth in slugging percentage. Manny Ramirez is fifth in slugging percentage and eighth in home runs.
