Red Sox Rundown - Who is the Ace?

Well, judging from the last two games, three members of the starting staff are really keeping us guessing on who may be the linchpin of the group. Maybe that incorrigible jokester Joe Kelly is behind all this. After all, Joe said he wanted to try stand up comedy so what's more amusing than telling everyone he thinks he's going to win the Cy Young and proceeding to get roasted by opposing starters and farmhands alike? How's 17 hits allowed in 7.1 IP? Grinning yet? Or .. get this... what about 9 ER and a batting average of .435 on his offerings. I know. It's just hilarious. But this gets even better.

Wade Miley decided to get in on the fun yesterday and allowed a homer and giving up 6 hit 4 runs and ... just for kicks.. 3 free passes. On a more serious note, many of his Red Sox teammates were very happy that he was on had today in the clubhouse when his teammates were visited by a snake. While many of his buddies jumped up on chairs fearing the uninvited reptilian guest, Miley channeled his inner Steve Irwin and saved the day, banishing the intruder to more hospitable surroundings.

Then, we have Justin Masterson who really offered a rib tickler by saying he was happy with his latest adjustments after being brutalized by the Phillies. So, lets get this straight: he pitched five scoreless innings allowing only one hit before Sunday's start, but after the "adjustments", he is lit up for 6 ER on 7 hits two of them being homers. Can you even say that with a straight face? One saving grace is that his wife bakes a mean cookie > http://www.bethelcollege.edu/magazine/2011/07/01/major-league-baking-with-meryl-masterson/ Maybe she can whip up a baker's dozen wins when the regular season hits.

In the clubhouse today, Clay Buchholz had his guitar out and he could be heard singing this verse of "The Gambler" over and over again:

"He said, "Son, I've made a life
Out of readin' people's faces
Knowin' what the cards were
By the way they held their eyes
So if you don't mind me sayin'
I can see you're out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
I'll give you some advice"

Now it's early and no need to push the panic button on the pitching front, but I know a few certainly have it at arm's length. One thing that will be a huge determinate of success this year will be the performance of this starting five.

Still, we need some pitching, so I hope the immortal words of Dennis Green will not be applied to the five members of the current starting rotation when all is said and done.
