NLCS Game # 4 - ' 82 Brewers vs ' 88 Mets

Game Four Slips Through Brewers' Fingers

Mookie Wilson's two out RBI single in the tenth inning completed a late inning comeback and placed the Milwaukee Brewers on the brink of elimination as the Mets defeated the Brewers 3-2 for a 3-1 series advantage. New York can punch their World Series ticket with a win in Game 5 at home.

New York's Ron Darling pitched flawlessly early on retiring the first 11 Milwaukee batters before Cecil Cooper took him over and out of the yard to stake the Brewers to a 1-0 lead. Darling tossed 7 innings and only allowed one hit while striking out 7. He was lifted after only firing 74 pitches for offensive purposes. Milwaukee starter Bob McClure was equally dazzling as he retired 14 batters in a row before leaving the game for a pinch hitter in the top of the ninth, giving way to Rollie Fingers, The Brewers added another run after Paul Molitor collected Milwaukee's second hit of the game, a double, and was then driven in by Cooper make the score 2-0 Brewers.

Mookie Wilson was the spark that ignited the comeback against hall of fame reliever Fingers by leading of the ninth with a single. Wilson moved to second on a ground out and scored on a Keith Hernandez double. Darryl Strawberry then hammer a double of his own to tie the score at 2-2. After a Kevin McReynolds single put Strawberry at third, the Mets attempted a squeeze bunt with Gary Carter at the plate. It failed as Strawberry was tagged out at home and Carter then struck out to end the inning.

In the tenth Kevin Elster, who is currently hitting .069, got aboard slashing a single and stole second. After reaching third on a ground out, he scampered home on Wilson's clutch single for a thrilling win.

Milwaukee will attempt to stave off elimination sending Game 1 winner Mike Caldwell up against the Mets' David Cone in a rematch of the series opener.
