NLCS Game # 3 - ' 82 Brewers vs ' 88 Mets

Ojeda Blanks Brewers for Series Lead

Bobby Ojeda was nothing short of brilliant tossing a complete game shutout in the Mets' 3-0 victory. New York now have taken a 2-1 NLCS series lead over Milwaukee. Ojeda had the Brewers completely off balance effectively mixing speeds and only allowing 4 hits. Milwaukee never mounted any type of offensive attack and only had one runner in scoring position throughout the entire game. That brief glimmer of hope came in the person of Ben Ogilvie who doubled off the top of the wall in deep center.

Milwaukee's Pete Vuckovich gamely battled, surrendering only 2 hits in 6 innings, but was lifted for offensive purposes when the Brewers went to the plate in the seventh inning. One of the two runs allowing by Vuckovich was unearned as Keith Hernandez reached on a Robin Yount throwing error, and he then came around to score on a Gary Carter single. If Milwaukee hope to extend the series they'll need offense from slumping centerfielder Gorman Thomas. Thomas belted 39 homers and drove in 112 runs in the '82 season, but in this NLCS he hasn't had a hit in 10 trips to the plate, striking out five times.

New York was led by Gary Carter who drove in 2 runs with an RBI single in the fourth and a solo homer off Brewers' reliever Randy Lerch in the seventh. Carter has had a hit in every game of the series and is 4-10 with 2 RBI. Howard Johnson drove in the winning run for the second game in a row early on in the second inning. Darryl Strawberry doubled to lead off the inning and went to third on a Cary Carter fly ball to right.

Game 4 will see the Mets' Ron Darling oppose the Brewers' Bob McClure as New York seeks a stranglehold on the series.
