ALDS Game 1 - ' 88 Red Sox vs ' 85 Yankees

Clemens Dazzles in Series Opener

Boston benefited from a virtuoso performance by Roger Clemens as he delivered a one run complete game victory at Fenway Park in Game 1 of the ALDS.  Clemens completely smothered a potent Yankee lineup and outdueled Yankees' ace Ron Guidry striking out 9 batters while only allowing 5 hits in a 3-1 Boston win. Guidry had a tremendous ' 85 season winning 22 games, but he only lasted 6 innings due to an inflated pitch count.

Boston opened things up in the second inning courtesy of an RBI groundout by Rich Gedman. Dwight Evans singled to begin the inning and was pushed over to third on a Jim Rice double. Evans would then count on Gedman's grounder to Yankees' second baseman Willie Randolph.

The Red Sox then had two unexpected power sources to back Clemens 'outstanding outing. In the sixth inning, Wade Boggs wrapped a ball around the Pesky Pole for a solo homer, and then Jody Reed dropped a fly ball to left just over the Green Monster in the eighth. The Yankees sandwiched their only run of the game between those long balls. After retiring ten batters in a  row, Clemens was nicked by an RBI doubled by Dave Winfield. New York threatened for more as Winfield moved to third on a groundout, but Clemens struck out Don Baylor on three pitches and got Willie Randolph to ground out to Wade Boggs to end the inning.

Boston will now send 18 game winner Bruce Hurst to the hill to face veteran knuckleballer Phil Niekro in Game 2.
