ALCS Game # 6 - ' 04 Red Sox vs ' 74 Athletics

Game Six a Blue Experience for Boston

Oakland’s Vida Blue fired a six hit complete game shutout to propel the Oakland A’s into the World Series with a 7-0 win over the Boston Red Sox. Boston never really mounted any type of threat throughout the game as Blue kept them off balance allowing just six singles and no free passes. Oakland will now face the 1954 New York Giants in the Fall Classic.

Derek Lowe attempted to duplicate his Game 2 heroics http://buzzingthetowersawx.blogspot.ca/2014/06/alcs-game-2-04-red-sox-vs-74-athletics.html but was lucky to escape the fourth inning only trailing by two. After plunking Billy North, Bert Campaneris hit a single to put runners on first and second. Sal Bando then lined a single to Boston’s Manny Ramirez in left field but he had trouble finding the handle and North scored easily.  With runners on second and third, Reggie Jackson was walked intentionally to load the bases as Boston looked for the inning ending double play. A grounder was hit by  Joe Rudi to Boston first baseman Kevin Millar, but he was only able to get the out at first and Oakland went up 2-0. Boston then elected to issue their second intentional pass to Gene Tenace so they could get to Angel Mangual to ground into a possible double play. Mangual obliged and the Red Sox escaped.

Unfortunately, the wheels came off for Lowe in the sixth. He got the first out but then Jackson singled and Rudi doubled to put runners on second and third. Boston intentionally walked Tenace for a second time to see if they could coax Mangual into another inning ending double play. Curtis Leskanic then came on for Lowe as he was entrusted with the task, but Mangual turned the tables on them and hit a sacrifice fly to left to make the score 3-0. Ray Fosse then hit an RBI single, Dick Green clubbed a two run double, and Billy North drilled an RBI single to chase Leskanic and dash any comeback hopes Boston may have had.

Below are the final stats for Boston in this playoff run along with the boxscore and highlight reel of Game 6. Stay tuned for another Red Sox playoff run as I’ll be selecting a different historic Boston team for more classic playoff baseball. I’ll also be playing the World Series matchup between the ’54 Giants and the ’74 A’s. I’ll be managing the Giants to see if I can get some revenge.
