The Sensational 70s - Fenway Faceoff for First

With both teams on the brink of registering 100 wins, the '78 New York Yankees come into Fenway in the last series of my Sensational 70s season to take on the '75 Boston Red Sox to duke it out for bragging rights of the American League East.  As it stands now, Boston is one game out of top spot and will have to sweep the series to win the AL East title outright. If they manage winning 2 games of the 3 game set, an extra playoff game would be needed to determined the division winner.

Boston trails in the head to head match up with New York with a 7-9 record. Provided Boston took 2 of the 3 games, the tiebreaker would be held in New York as the Yankees would hold a regular season edge in the win/loss column. The Orioles will be the other wildcard team, and Boston would dearly love to avoid a one game winner take all against this robust offense.

Below are the probable pitchers for the series:

Game 1

Game 2

Game 3

Both teams have benefited from terrific starting pitching. The Yankees sit second overall in ERA while Boston comes in at fifth.  Boston and New York have 2 starting pitchers in the top ten in the American League in ERA. The Yankees' Ron Guidry is tops in the American League in this category, and teammate Ed Figueroa comes in at fifth with a 2.95 mark. Boston's Bill Lee sits fourth overall while Rick Wise sits in the tenth spot.
To further inspect the "tail of the tape" in this crucial series, here are the regular season numbers for the starters of both clubs.

On paper, it looks as though the first game of the series is a must win for Boston. They have their staff ace Bill Lee looking to nullify the potent left sided swinging Yankees. The second game looks like a mismatch with Reggie Cleveland up against Guidry, but the finale sees Tiant contending with Jim Beattie which should be an advantage for Boston. The Red Sox also have a better balance of power from both sides of the plate, but with New York facing two righties, Craig Nettles, Reggie Jackson and switching hitting Roy White could be deciding factors.
