Not going to linger long with my observations as I only saw the last two innings, and the condensed games only reveal so much. My enjoyable evening of watching my 18 year old son's band, Prism Shores, play at a local watering hole called the Trailside Cafe was marred by the antics of our bullpen village idiot.
Dave Dombrowski went on record by saying he is content with his bullpen, but after two hiccups in consecutive nights, he may want to get his trigger finger ready. I've never been fond of Robbie Ross Jr. as a reliable bullpen option and would rather see him catching Red Sox homers with his hat than pitch meaningful innings. Some were saying he was gassed and Farrell left him in too long, but he was throwing 95 mph but wide of his target as can be attested by the HBP and walks in the seventh that led to the winning run. The thing you can count on with Ross is that he's consistently inconsistent.
It would be easy to jump on the nuts of Steven Wright in his pitiful outing if he wasn't the glue that has been holding the starting staff together. With our self-deprecating 30 million dollar "ace" railing on how bad he has been after nearly every start he's made, Wright has turned in an all-star campaign. In my mind, looking the other way is a no-brainer, especially after the offense backed him and gave the bullpen a chance to win it. We did see, however, that when you rely on a knuckleball pitcher as a stopper it can be a very fickle proposition.
Boston now needs to avoid the sweep this afternoon and generate some momentum before a grueling 11 game West Coast road trip. This series loss will snap a string of 6 consecutive series wins or draws logged by the Sawx.
