As a diehard Red Sox fan, I'll be predominantly featuring virtual baseball on the Sawx like my 2003 playoff replay that I have underway. However, occasionally I like to showcase some of the other great teams from the past as I usually have 3 or 4 different playoff scenarios on the go simultaneously. Today, my classic baseball look-in pitted the 1992 Toronto Blue Jays against the 2003 Florida Marlins. This particular game was Game 2 of a World Series matchup.
Toronto's Kelly Gruber would be the hero socking a two-run homer in the top of the eighth off Marlins' reliever Nate Bump to lead the Blue Jays a 5-2 win. With the victory, Toronto has evened their series with Florida at a game apiece as the scene shifts back to Rogers' Centre. Check out Kelly's bat flip after his opposite-field shot.
Mark Eichorn and Mike Timlin played the roles of unsung heroes firing 3 innings of scoreless baseball for the Jays. Starter Jimmy Key was lifted after 6 innings with Toronto trailing 2-1. Key provided a stingy outing allowing only 4 hits and struck out four Marlins. After the Blue Jays tied things up on a sacrifice fly, Eichorn was thrust into a dicey situation in the bottom of the seventh. Toronto right fielder Joe Carter committed a three-base error misjudging a flyball which put the leading run on third. Eichorn had retired the first two batters before Derrek Lee's drive fooled Carter. With Miguel Cabrera due up, I put him on with an intentional walk, and Eichorn got Alex Gonzalez to hit a weak pop up behind first to end the inning. Timlin followed up Eichorn by punching out 4 of the 5 batters he faced to secure the win.
Florida starter Dontrelle Willis matched Key logging 6 innings as well and had given the Marlins the lead in the third belting a solo homer. Willis was replaced by Bump after Manny Lee led off the seventh with a double. Lee eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Devon White.
