Classic Baseball - Tablesetters Topple Sawx

Boston allowed another terrific starting pitching performance to slip away making Jon Lester the hardluck loser in Game 2 of their ALDS against the '98 Yankees. New York's Andy Pettitte narrowly bested Lester for 8 innings, and seemed to have a lock for a win with all time saves leader Mariano Rivera entering the game in the ninth.

The  2007 Red Sox clung to a 1-0 lead courtesy of a solo shot to right in the fifth by Manny Ramirez until the eighth inning. With the leadoff runner, Scott Brosius, reaching on a free pass, Chuck Knoblauch took Lester over the left field wall to push the Yankee advantage to 2-1. In the final frame, fans would bear witness to a 9 pitch duel between Rivera and Kevin Youkilis end with a game tying homer.

After Manny Delcarmen and Javier Lopez combined to put out the fire in the eighth, Jonathan Papelbon came on to shut down the Yankees in the home half of the ninth. Unfortunately, in the first stanza of bonus baseball, it was then Boston's closer turn to falter. After a leadoff single from Knoblauch, Derek Jeter ripped a double into right center that brought home the game winning run. Jeter and Knoblauch were a combined 4-9 with a homer, 2 doubles, and 3 RBI.

The Red Sox have hit 5 homers in the series, but all have been solo shots. This inability to score in bunches has made the margin of error too small for Sawx starters and has put Boston in a huge 0-2 series hole heading home to Fenway. Game 3 will see Curt Schilling trying to extend the series against David Wells.
